Barbados finds cocaine on vessel from Guyana

Barbados authorities yesterday found 60 kilos of cocaine aboard a vessel that left Guyana last Friday.

Another boat, a Barbadian-owned one was also nabbed during the operation.

A local official confirmed to Stabroek News that five Guyanese have been arrested as a result of the bust at Bridgetown Port on a small fertilizer vessel Ocean Harvest, which saw collaboration between local customs officials and authorities on the island. In addition to the cocaine, 200 kilos of marijuana were also found by the authorities. It is not clear what was found on the Barbadian boat but two Barbadians are also in custody.

This is the latest in a series of drug busts over recent months aboard vessels originating from Guyana.

In September, a Guyanese vessel was held in St Lucia’s waters with weapons, drugs and six Guyanese aboard and the ensuing probe led to a gun and ammo charge against a well-known boxing promoter on the island who was born in Linden. A record 60 charges were slapped against the six Guyanese.

Last month, anti-narcotics authorities in Jamaica uncovered more than 50 lbs of cocaine on board the vessel, MV Vega Azurit which travelled from Guyana. The vessel had been intercepted previously with drugs, including in March when $700M in cocaine was found in a container onboard.
