An 18-year-old farmer, charged with two counts of assault and two counts of unlawful weapon possession, was on Tuesday remanded to prison.

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, heard that on November 3, at Aishalton Village, South Rupununi, Ramsonyan Tumma allegedly assaulted Owen Cyril and Joan Joseph.

Further, the court heard that in August the accused was said to have had a .38 revolver in his possession without being the holder of a firearm licence at that time.

In addition, on the same day, at Aishalton Village, the man is also accused of having a 20-gauge single-barrel shotgun in his possession without being the holder of a firearm licence at that time.

The court also heard that on November 4, the man allegedly had in his possession one 20-gauge shotgun cartilage, without being the holder of a firearm licence at that time. Tumma pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Prosecutor Lionel Harvey said that on the day in question the defendant had a .38 revolver in his possession and allegedly confronted Joseph, demanding that she accompany him.

The woman refused and in response Tumma allegedly threatened and assaulted her. The matter was reported to the Toshao who confronted the defendant and as a result he was also allegedly assaulted.
Harvey objected to bail on the grounds that no special circumstances was presented to the court, and asked that the matter be transferred to the Lethem Magistrates’ Court.
