Mother of four remanded on ganja charge

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry remanded a mother of four when she appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday to answer to the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

The court heard that on November 3, at 111 Miles, Mahdia Sonia Cameron, 44, a clothes vendor, allegedly had 360 grammes of cannabis in her possession. She pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Her attorney, Patrice Henry, told the court that the substance was not found on his client but in a tenement yard; however, the police held Cameron responsible.

Prosecutor Lionel Harvey told the court that the defendant resides in a single bedroom cottage. On the day in question, police went to the woman’s home and conducted a search in her presence after which an amount of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis, were discovered in a scotch-taped parcel. The woman was cautioned, taken to the police station and the narcotic was weighed in her presence. It amounted to 360 grams.

Harvey then objected to bail on the grounds that no special circumstance had been presented to the court. He also asked that the matter be transferred to Mahdia Magistrates’ Court.

Cameron was ordered to appear in the Mahdia court on January 18.
