Cotton Tree man killed in backdam confrontation

The police say they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Ramzan Ally, 27, of Cotton Tree, West Coast Berbice, who was allegedly shot by a man he had confronted and threatened.

According to a police release, at around 4.30 pm on Sunday, a rice farmer was going into the Cotton Tree Backdam in a motor vehicle, when he was allegedly confronted by Ally who was on horseback.

Ally, the release said, was armed with a handgun and threatened to kill the rice farmer, who is a licensed firearm holder. As a result, the rice farmer discharged a round from his shotgun, which struck Ally to his upper body.

The release revealed that Ally’s body was later discovered on a dam in the Cotton Tree Backdam. A 9 mm Smith and Wesson pistol with two rounds was also found in the area by the police, it continued.

Sources in the area told this newspaper yesterday that Ally was a known convict who had had many brushes with the law and had served some prison time. They also said he lived with his grandmother and grew up under poor circumstances.

Sources also said that an employee of the shooter, who is also a cattle farmer, witnessed the incident and hurriedly left the scene, and made a report to the police.

The farmer is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
