North Ruimveldt woman remanded on ganja charge

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry remanded a North Ruimveldt woman who appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with possession of ganja.

The court heard that on November 11, at the Bartica Police Station, Ayodele Williams allegedly had in her possession 239 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

The allegation is that on the said day, Williams was at the Bartica Ferry Stelling when police ranks, acting on information received, arrested her and took her to the station where a search was conducted on her person. The cannabis was found concealed in a pair of short pants she was wearing under her dress.

The prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds that no special circumstances were presented to the court for the defendant to be granted bail.

Williams was ordered to appear in the Bartica Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
