Man to stand trial over 2006 Xmas Eve murder

Sherwin Barnwell who was charged in the 2006 Christmas Eve murder of Nohar Singh appeared yesterday before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and was committed to stand trial in the High Court.

The accused also called ‘Reeya’, 23, of Friendship, East Bank Demerara, expressed his frustration at being incarcerated for four years after the ruling was read to him.

“I have been in prison four years  now, it is not easy in there… no one knows what I am thinking of doing right now,” adding that the conditions of the prison are very inhumane.

“I don’t get sunlight or nothing … my complexion is changing by the time I come out of here I am gonna be a white man… I never killed anyone,” he said.

It is alleged that between December 24 and 25 of  2006 at Friendship, EBD he murdered Nohar Singh, also known as ‘Bunty’.  It was reported that Singh, 42, was robbed and beaten to death a few yards from his home.

Police patrolling the area found Bahadur of 24 Friendship lying dead on the Friendship Public Road. His face had been battered beyond recognition and his body bore marks of violence.
Reports further stated that Bahadur had just left a barbecue where he had an argument with a man and was heading home when two men on a bicycle confronted him. They robbed him of cash among other things and then inflicted a severe beating on him before fleeing.
