Sophia man injured trying to escape cops

– after alleged gun deal foiled

A Sophia man yesterday sustained minor injuries after he slammed into a vehicle in an attempt to escape the police moments after he was reportedly seen with a firearm on Cemetery Road, La Penitence.

The 27-year-old man was rushed to the hospital by police yesterday midday after he allegedly attempted to complete a transaction with another man, which the police interrupted.

According to reports, the injured man was riding along Cemetery Road when he met with another and took out a small pistol. As he was handing over the weapon, police, who were on patrol at the time, approached them. The man dashed away on his bicycle.

It was in his attempt to escape that he slammed into a parked vehicle and injured himself, a police source reported.

He was picked up by the patrol team and the weapon was found on him, reports said.

At the hospital, police were seen handling the weapon while the man was sitting in the Accident and Emergency Unit, crying out for pain to his back.
When asked if the other individual was apprehended, the police source refused to comment.

The man was treated and sent away in police custody.
