A 38–year old man who allegedly had narcotics in his possession for the purpose of trafficking was on Friday remanded to prison after he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ court.
The court was told that on December 21 at Georgetown, the accused, Lyndon Hodge, a clothes vendor allegedly had 25 grammes of cannabis in his possession. The man pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him. Attorney Adrian Thompson who represented Hodge in his application for bail stressed to the court that the narcotics was not discovered on his client. He said that the police carried out a search in the man’s car during his absence when the alleged cannabis was discovered.
In narrating the police facts to the court, the prosecution said that on the day in question a police patrol was in the Stabroek market area when it observed the accused and others gaming. Prosecutor Lionel Harvey added that the ranks approached the gathering but the other men fled the scene. The defendant, the prosecution noted, was taken to the police station. Harvey stated that the defendant’s car which was parked nearby was also taken to the police station after the man made the request. When the vehicle arrived there, Harvey added, a thorough search was carried out in the car and several zip lock bags containing leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis were discovered. The content was weighed in the accused’s presence, the prosecution concluded.
After listening to the prosecution’s facts the magistrate overruled the application made by the attorney. The defendant was remanded to prison until January 9.
