T&T Guard killed during supermarket hold-up

(Trinidad Express) A 47-year-old security officer was shot and killed while on duty at a supermarket in Palmiste, San Fernando on Saturday.

Holly Matthews, of Chin Chin Road, Madras, Enterprise, Chaguanas, was shot twice in the head by two armed men at Park View Supermarket in Palmiste.

Police reports state that around 6.45 p.m. two armed men entered the supermarket, walked up to Matthews, who was sitting, and shot him in the head.

The men then relieved Matthews, a sergeant with Pentagon Security, of his firearm and proceeded to rob the Lotto outlet as well as several customers.

Shawn Matthews, brother of Holly, said the last time he saw his brother was in May. He found out that his brother had been killed while on duty by a friend of the family.

He described his brother as a very reserved man who took his job very seriously.

“He never interfered with anybody but in the line of work he was straightforward.”

Matthews, who was unsure when his brother would be buried, said the security firm has agreed to pay for the funeral.

Police are investigating.
