Woman refuses to testify against partner in abuse case

Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday ordered a woman to pay the sum of $10,000, after she declined to proceed with a case against the father of her seven children.

Sabrina Persaud appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court One with Glendon Joseph, who had been charged with using abusive language towards her and unlawfully assaulting her.

When asked by the Magistrate if she would like to give evidence against Joseph, Persaud said, “Is seven children I have with him, so I don’t want to proceed with the matter against him.”

The matter was then dismissed, and Persaud ordered to pay $5,000 in court costs for each charge.
