Farmer remanded on wounding charge

A farmer accused of wounding another man was yesterday remanded to prison after appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that on October 7, 2010 at Georgetown, Ralph Jordan unlawfully and maliciously wounded Gavin Osborne.

The defendant who resides at 3456 Jacksonville, North Ruimveldt denied the charge of unlawful and malicious wounding when it was read to him by the acting chief magistrate.

In giving the prosecution’s facts on the case, Police Corporal Venetta Pindar said that on the day in question the men were involved in a heated argument which escalated to a physical confrontation when the virtual complainant (VC) was chucked on his arm by the defendant and sustained injuries.

After the scuffle, Pindar said, the complainant went to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he obtained a medical certificate for the injuries.

The prosecution objected to the accused being granted bail on the grounds that he poses a risk of flight. According to Pindar, Jordan had been on the run after the incident and it was only on January 16 that the police caught and arrested him.

Jordan who said that he suffers from malaria and had a relapse last Wednesday begged the magistrate to be granted reasonable bail. He said that because of his medical condition, he is required to attend the hospital every other day to receive treatment.

However, the unrepresented Jordan was remanded to prison. His matter was transferred to Court Ten for January 24 for reports and fixture for trial.
