De Kinderen labourer dies after fracas with stepson

A 58-year-old labourer of De Kinderen, West Coast Demerara died on Saturday evening following an altercation with another relative.

According to the police, Nandalall Williams called ‘Poodle’, 58, was murdered around 7 pm on Saturday at De Kinderen, WCD.

Investigations revealed that Williams and his stepson had an argument during which he was struck about his body with a piece of wood. He was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH) where he succumbed to his injuries.

The deceased’s step-daughter Bibi Nazmoon Ali, told Stabroek News at the family’s home yesterday that her stepfather and her mother had an argument sometime last week and her mother subsequently relocated temporarily with another relative in the city.

She said that Williams also left the family’s home for another building in the community where he is employed as a caretaker. She said that he returned sometime on Saturday and began to imbibe during the day. She said he would lie about the house in his drunken state and Saturday afternoon was no exception.

She said that she and her brother, the main suspect in the incident, moved to the outside of the family’s home on Saturday afternoon, adding that he too was drinking.
Ali stated that sometime later her brother was outside of the yard and proceeded to re-enter. Williams told him not to enter the gate. She said that sometime after, her brother approached the gate and attempted to enter the yard for a second time. Williams then ran towards him with an old cutlass.

She said, ’me brother pick up a piece a wood from down deh an after he run he wid de cutlass and pelt it at he me brother pelt the wood at he’. She said that both men then fell on the ground during a scuffle, adding that she ran for help during this time.

Another resident came to her assistance and parted the men and Williams was subsequently rushed towards a taxi. He was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital for treatment and was subsequently transferred to the WDRH. She said that the injured man was bleeding profusely from the head.
According to reports, sometime yesterday morning, the police visited the scene of the incident and arrested Ashraf Ali, 47.
The deceased’s wife Bibi Zabeeda Ali told Stabroek News that it was only yesterday she returned from the city and according to her, she and the Williams had been together for some 24 years.

“When he drink he always mek problems and I does got to try to control he”, the grieving woman stated.
She noted too that whenever the two men imbibe together, they would misbehave and she would try in vain to keep them apart. She added that, “Nandalall is a (hot-tempered) person and when he drink he very disrespectful”.
According to the police, the suspect is in custody assisting with the investigations.
