Body of missing Corentyne fisher found in Philippi pond

The bloated body of a fisherman of Cromarty, Corentyne was discovered floating in a pond around 9:25 am on Wednesday, two days after he was reported missing.

The man, Ringo Hassan Bidasy, 47, called ‘Chiprick’ left home in the wee hours of Monday morning to go fishing in a pond at Philippi.

His sister, Patricia ‘Pops’ Ramnauth, 49, told Stabroek News that they suspected that something was amiss after his shirts, a sweater, raincoat and cigarettes [in a plastic bag] were found floating in a trench around 10:30 am on Monday.

His cast-net was found under an abandoned car and it appeared as though the man had not yet used it.

As the news spread, villagers came out and assisted the relatives to search for the missing man but came up empty-handed. On Tuesday when the search continued the man’s underpants were found among some bushes.

Ramnauth who described her brother as a “cast-net fisherman” said he would normally go out “after the full moon when he would get more hassar.” She also said he was a good swimmer.

According to her he had left home at 2 pm on Sunday and returned at 6 pm with 22 hassars. He told her that he would have made “another rounds early the next morning.”

She said she left to go to her farm in the backdam around 8:30 am after checking a ‘vacant’ house he owned to see if he was there. After she did not see him she assumed that he was still fishing.

She was on her way out of the backdam around 11 am when her son, Alexander, 16 called to inform her about the man’s clothing in the trench.

The woman said her brother was always a kind and willing person to her and everyone in the area.
