Handyman caught red-handed with cocaine -court hears

Robb Street handyman Warren James was remanded to prison yesterday on the charge that police found him with two grammes of cocaine while searching his premises.

James, of 80 Robb Street, Bourda, was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking. He denied the charge when it was read to him by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The handyman, Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court, was found with the drug when the police conducted a search at his Bourda location on March 31. James, upon seeing them, reportedly ran and dropped a container, in which four pieces of whitish substance believed to be cocaine were found. Telford said that the police retrieved the items and later apprehended James. The substance, along with the accused, was then taken to the police station, where it was weighed in his presence.

The unrepresented James made an application on his own behalf to be admitted to bail but he was denied by the magistrate, who noted that no special circumstances were provided to the court for this consideration. He was then remanded to prison and the matter was transferred to Court Five for April 7.
