Cinderella to be staged at NCC this weekend

Cinderella, the Guyanese depiction with a touch of humour, is planned for this weekend, April 16 and 17, at the National Cultural Centre (NCC).

Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T), Yog Mahadeo, whose company is sponsoring the production, described it at a press conference as being of an “extremely high standard.”

Matinee shows are to be held on April 13 and 14 at the NCC from 2 pm for students. The gala show is scheduled for Saturday, April 16 and Sunday, April 17, also at the NCC. Patrons are asked to arrive promptly at 7 pm.

Tickets for ‘blue seats’, which are at the very front of the auditorium, cost $2000 while the remaining auditorium front seats cost $1000. Tickets for the back are priced at $500.

Tickets to attend the gala are available to students at  $200. All tickets can be uplifted at the NCC.

Head of the Dramatic Arts Academy, Neeaz Subhan, considers the play to be something different and new. He told the GT&T press conference that Cinderella was chosen because of its popularity and it would lay the foundation for similar projects.

Subhan said that the play has a cast of seven persons with a few extras. Moreover, the audience will also play an integral part in many ways.

Meanwhile, director of the play Mahadeo Shivraj explained that it’s been over a year that this play has been spoken of. “I’m glad to see it finally come to fruition,” he said. He further noted that the production is expected to be at such a level that patrons will be in awe. “I want people to think… wow, I can’t believe they’ve done that,” Shivraj stated.

The director also spoke of the moral of the story. “The beauty of fairy tales is that the ones who have hope and faith always win. That’s the moral of this story, the one who stays with hope and faith gains happiness,” he noted.

Shivraj also mentioned that this show is not just for children but also for adults because of the difference in the format. “This show will be done in the form of comedy,” he declared.

Meanwhile, Mahadeo reassured the Dramatic Arts Academy that GT&T will be willing to support positive initiatives, such as this one, in the future. He stated that he leaves the challenge to persons within the academy to bring forth more ideas.

“The heartbeat of GT&T is the heartbeat of Guyana,” Mahadeo said, “I hope that Guyanese will find their dreams in a glass slipper,” the CEO added.
