Prison escapee recaptured at Bush Lot

Yesterday in the early morning hours, police in Berbice captured wanted man Eddie Williams aka Kevin Williams who had escaped from custody in February and is a murder suspect.

The 18-year-old was caught at 00.30 hrs at Section D Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice (WCB). The police had received information that a suspicious looking man was in the area looking around at person’s houses. They later learnt that he was in an abandoned house and they went into the area and arrested him. At the time of the arrest he was with the 17-year-old girl who is the mother of his child.

One resident of the area, who was going downstairs to cook at the time of the arrest, said she heard a single gunshot and ran back into her house. She said she did not exit the house again until 04:00 hrs.

A wanted bulletin was issued in February after Williams reportedly walked through the gates of the Georgetown Prisons on Camp Street.

He was on remand over murder committed on Jermaine Jones. Williams reportedly committed the murder on November 30 at a Ruimzeigt, West Coast Demerara address that he shared with his aunt who was Jones’ girlfriend.

Upon his arrest, Williams told the police that he was in the area over a month looking for a job. This newspaper was told that he was employed by a local business in the area for some time.

Meanwhile, during a roadblock yesterday, senior police officers and other ranks in the vicinity of Weldaad WCB held a 19-year-old with 480 grammes of cannabis.

Police noticed that a minibus had stopped about 200 yards from the roadblock and saw the young man exit the bus with a black backpack; he was acting in a suspicious manner. They approached him, searched him and found a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be marijuana. He is in custody and is expected to be charged on Monday.
