Kariako farmer shot dead in hunting mishap

The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of farmer Alvis Matthews, 45 years of Kariako Village, Moruka, NWD, which occurred at about 0600h yesterday  at Karaiko.

A police release said that investigations have revealed that Matthews, his son and another man were in a boat preparing to go hunting when a round was discharged from an improvised shotgun that was in the son’s possession.  Matthews was hit to his back and subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

The suspect has been arrested and the improvised shotgun seized by the police.

The police expressed appreciation for the assistance given by the Toshao of the village in this matter.
