A man from Annandale who is accused of trafficking in a quantity of marijuana and cocaine was yesterday remanded to prison after appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation against Dennis Daniels is that on July 4 on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) he had in his possession 44 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
On the same day, Daniels is alleged to have had in his possession 161 grams of cocaine also for the purpose of trafficking.
The defendant denied both charges when they were read to him by the magistrate.
Police Corporal Venetta Pindar who presented the facts of the case said that on the day in question at about 11:40 hrs ranks from the narcotics branch were conducting a raid at Annandale, ECD when the accused was discovered with the illegal drugs.
According to Pindar, the ranks who went to the man’s Annandale home conducted a search on him and a bottle containing the suspected cannabis was found in his pants pocket.
The corporal said that further checks at the man’s premises unearthed a peanut butter bottle in which the suspected cocaine was found in his presence.
Pindar said that the accused was later taken to the narcotics branch where the suspected illegal drugs were weighed in his presence and amounted to the quantities stated in the charge. He was subsequently told of the offences committed, arrested and charged.
The prosecution objected to the accused being granted his pre-trial liberty, stating that there existed no special circumstances relating to the offence.
The prosecution’s request was granted and Daniels was informed that he will be remanded to prison. The matter will be called again on July 11.
