Nickerie District Commissioner charged

(De Ware Tijd) PARAMARIBO – The days of Laksmienarain Doebay as District Commissioner (DC) of Nickerie seem to be numbered. The Prosecutor General has arraigned him as a suspect in a case in which he allegedly beat another man with a brake cable and held him at gunpoint. Doebay must appear in court to face charges on August 17. DWT has learned that Regional Development (RO) Minister Linus Diko will meet with Doebay on Monday. It seems inevitable that the DC will be advised to resign. He has also lost much political support, such as that of NDP Parliamentarian Rashied Doekhie.
