Cocaine card intercepted at GPO

Officers attached to the Drug Enforcement Unit of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) yesterday morning intercepted a quantity of cocaine in a card bound for Canada.

According to reports, sometime after 8 am yesterday morning the officers attached to the two anti-narcotics agencies were called in by their colleagues at the Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) main branch in the city to inspect an envelope which contained a birthday card which was addressed to an individual in Canada.

The mail was sent by an individual who gave an Ogle, East Coast Demerara (ECD) address and was among a quantity which was placed in the mail boxes at the GPOC over the weekend.

A source close to the investigation told this newspaper yesterday that the weight of the cocaine amounted to close to a kilogram and he noted that checks were being made to determine how many more such mails may have been placed at the mail boxes at the GPOC containing the illegal substance.

The source noted that the illegal substance was stashed in the card under a thin layer of plastic which was covered with a transparent layer of scotch tape.

Investigations are on-going.
