Melvyn Sankies laid to rest

Veteran engineer Melvyn “Mel” Sankies was yesterday laid to rest following a funeral service attended by Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and other dignitaries at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Brickdam.

There were glowing tributes to Sankies, aeronautical engineer, executive member of the Guyana Association of Professional Engineers, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana,  Rotarian, former President of the Guyana Body Building Federation and the Lusignan Golf Club among numerous other organizations.

Relatives of Mel Sankies file past his casket during his funeral service at The cathedral of Immaculate Conception, Brickdam.

The ceremony officiated by Fr. Malcolm Rodrigues, friend and University of Guyana colleague of Sankies,  was very solemn and many persons could be heard still expressing shock at his death while reminiscing on times spent with him. A visibly emotional sister Jean read the first lesson on the funeral’s programme while his younger brother, Geoffrey Sankies, read the second lesson.

Sankies died last Thursday evening at the age of 73 after developing complications from a minor surgery he had undergone earlier that day.
