According to a release from the Japanese authorities, the Ambassador of Japan, Tatsuaki Iwata, will sign notes of exchange for “the project for the rehabilitation of the East Demerara Water Conservancy 11,” with the Government of Guyana. Foreign Affairs Minister Carolyn Rodrigues–Birkett will sign on behalf of the Guyana government. The signing is scheduled for September 6 at Foreign Affairs Ministry.

According to the release, the project is funded under the Grant Aid Scheme of the government of Japan and the amount of the grant is $302M Japanese Yen, equivalent to US$3.8M.

Through the project, rehabilitation will be undertaken at Ann’s Grove, Hope, Annandale and Nancy as well as at two relief sluices at Maduni and Sarah Johanna. In addition, the release noted, the project will also provide technical assistance for quality and execution management, as well as maintenance management.

The project is the second phase of rehabilitation projects at the EDWC; the first phase was aimed at facilitating the procurement of equipment such as super long arm excavators and pontoons for the rehabilitation of banks. The agreement for that project was signed on March 26, 2011.
