UNDP: Transformation of Caribbean police forces necessary

(De Ware Tijd) PARAMARIBO – Despite the fact that police forces in the Caribbean invest much more in police officers, much more has to be done to make the transition more effective. Police organizations should abandon the model that is mostly aimed at state security and adopt a model of citizen-oriented police action. That is one of the recommendations in the draft UNDP-report on citizen security in the region. Research was done in Jamaica, Suriname, Guyana, Antigua & Barbuda, St. Lucia, Trinidad & Tobago and Barbados into citizen security in recent months. Last weeks, interest groups and others involved in security policy could comment on the interim report. The definite version will be issued in December.
