NCN bans Vybz Kartel songs

The National Communications Network (NCN) has banned airplay of Jamaican dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel’s songs, citing their lewd content.

Stabroek News was told that the ban was placed on the artiste’s music on radio and television recently and will continue indefinitely.

A notice, which was seen by this newspaper, reads: “Effective Immediately. Music of Vybz Kartel must not be played on air. All producers and presenters please note.”

This newspaper was unable to reach NCN’s music and programme managers for comment yesterday, but a source at the state entity noted that the ban may be related to the Jamaican’s no-show at a Jamzone concert last month.

Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, was expected to perform at the Jamzone regional night on August 19, but reportedly walked off a Caribbean Airlines plane, moments before take-off. He gave no official explanation for the snub, which left many of his fans disappointed. He had also bailed on previous commitments to perform here.

Kartel was due to perform alongside former rival Mavado at the event.
