Cops probing fatal De Willem accident

The police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred on the De Willem Public Road, West Coast Demerara, which resulted in the death of an unidentified man.

According to a police release, at around 3.45 yesterday afternoon the man, of East Indian descent, was walking along the roadway, when he was struck down by a motor lorry.

The release said the man was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

When Stabroek News visited the area, in the vicinity of Internet World, persons there related that the man, who appeared to have been intoxicated, attempted to cross the road in front of the truck. As a result, the driver of the truck swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting the pedestrian, but the side of the vehicle still collided with him. Eyewitnesses said that at the same time a hearse was passing, and that is what transported him to the hospital.

Police said the victim appears to be in his mid-forties, is medium built, dark complexioned and about 5’7” in height.

The body is at the WDRH mortuary and up to press time last night his body was yet to be identified. Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle is in police custody assisting with investigations.
