33 killed in Zambia road accident—police

LUSAKA,  (Reuters) – At least 33 people were killed  in Zambia yesterday when a bus smashed into a truck about 300  km (180 miles) east of the capital Lusaka, police said.

“The 33, who include six children, died this morning when  the bus belonging to the Zambia-Malawi fleet collided head-on  with the truck,” police spokeswoman Ndandula Siamana said.

Police could not immediately confirm the nationalities of  the victims.

Roads in the southern African country are extremely  dangerous and buses and other vehicles are often overloaded or  poorly maintained.

Siamana said the truck caught fire after the collision.  Police were were still investigating the cause of the accident and would issue a more comprehensive statement later, she said.
