How was Toshao Xavier chosen to serve on the UN forum?

Dear Editor,

Peter Persaud seems to be the government’s propaganda man on Amerindian affairs. So I ask him by what democratic process was Toshao Xavier selected by the government to serve on the UN forum? (‘Government’s nomination of Toshao Xavier to serve on a UN forum should be appreciated by all the Amerindian communities of Guyana’ SN, December 27, 2010.) Mr Persaud must stop making mountains out of molehills to curry political favour with the PPP. An indigenous person must be nominated. Guyana nominated an indigenous person in Bertie Xavier. If not him, it would have been another Amerindian nominee. There was nothing special about this decision. It had to be done in exactly this manner. Let us not allow political desperation for the Amerindian vote to cloud our judgement. This is no indication of the PPP taking extraordinary measures for Amerindians. It is an indication of Amerindians getting a post they are entitled to by right under the UN.

Yours faithfully,

M Maxwell
