Ramsay Ali should be president of the GCB

Dear Editor,

I have been following keenly the euphoria regarding the imminent elections for the new executive of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB). I decided to add my lines after having read a letter to the press from a previous administrator.  But in his veiled attempt at giving a balanced and fair assessment of the three potential candidates he took a swipe at Mr Ramsay Ali, listing all of his perceived shortcomings during his short tenure on the board, bearing in mind he had outlined all his positive contributions to cricket while he served as an administrator.

However, cricket in Guyana today is in a very bad state. The levels of corruption, the non-existence of functioning clubs, the non-playing of cricket competitions and the absence of cricket-playing venues speak for themselves.  The task is a herculean one for the incoming administrator, and we should not envy the person who makes himself available as it will come with much personal sacrifice if he wants to see the improvement of cricket in Guyana.

In this regard I have no qualms in endorsing Mr Ali should he run for the post of President of the GCB.  I have known him for a number of years and to all the organizations of which he has been a part he has given yeomen service, and may I say in most cases it has all been voluntary.

I think what distinguishes this individual from the others is his character, his integrity, his commitment to his family and church, and a style that I find very admirable – his down-to-earth, hands-on approach in getting the task done.

I am quite sure once he is elected there would be a transformation of cricket in Guyana in all the regions, and I would urge him to work assiduously to achieve these goals.
Yours faithfully,
Daniel Thomas
