Georgetown’s parapets are encumbered by roadside mechanics, and the like

Dear Editor,

I write to commend Mr Bhulai and Mr E B John for their eye-opening letters to save the Garden City. Both writers have shown the kind of vision which would see a new era of orderliness around the city of Georgetown.

Oronoque and Charlotte streets

However, reform may not be possible with the present city council which aids and abets the sort of nuisance which offends the neighbourhood.

For example, there is the case of Oronoque and Charlotte streets, Georgetown, as reflected in the photographs which I enclose for the benefit of members of the city council in the hope that they would take some action, belated though it may be, to abate the nuisances created around the Garden City by parapet mechanics, public road and parapet car washers, and roadside trading fixtures, etc.

The following are prime examples: At the junction of Camp and Croal streets (east of Camp Street); at the junction of Oronoque and Charlotte streets (east and west of Oronoque Street); at the junction of Peter Rose and Laluni streets, Queenstown (east and west of Laluni street); at the junction of Fourth and Light streets, Alberttown (north-eastern corner), etc.

Editor, the decimation of Georgetown’s city parapets should be a roving photographer’s dream, which would give your investigative reporters an opportunity to serve the residents of the offended communities.

Yours faithfully,
Ian King
