Ramkarran is a man for all the people

Dear Editor,

I have been following with great interest, the profiles of persons entering the race at this year’s general elections to be the next president of Guyana, and I think attorney-at-law, Ralph Ramkarran is the most suitable candidate. I say this with great confidence because I know that Mr Ramkarran, Speaker of the National Assembly and member of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) is the only person who has the ability to take Guyana forward. Not only does he have the experience and qualifications to do the job but he has the qualities and personality of a leader. I also find him to be a humble and approachable ‘gentle’ gentleman who listens to people without becoming arrogant.

Editor, he is definitely my choice and should be the choice of all Guyanese who have the interest of this country at heart. Mr Ramkarran was involved in the struggles from the grass-roots level to make Guyana a better place. He has been an active member of the party and was involved in politics from a young age, having grown up in a ‘revolutionary’ house. Mr Ramkarran is not new to politics and has with him a wealth of experience.
He started out his political life by assisting an older cousin to announce public meetings for the elections in 1957, after which his father, Boysie Ramkarran, became a government minister.
He believes in the fight for human rights and as a young lawyer who had just returned from studies in the United Kingdom in 1973 he defended dozens of youths who faced continuous harassment. Mr Ramkarran was also greatly admired by many after he successfully defended a youth who was framed on a murder charge and tried in 1976, 1977 and again in 1978. The case had attracted international interest and condemnation and the man was eventually acquitted.

Editor, this presidential hopeful has served in many outstanding positions, including his role as Speaker and Chair of the Parliamentary Management Commitment, and has presided over the widest and most extensive body of reforms in the history of the National Assembly. I truly believe that if given a chance, Guyana would benefit tremendously from his presidency because he is a man for all the people.

Yours faithfully,
Abdool Khaliel Rahman
