Garbage collection at Westminster, WCD has ceased

Dear Editor,

I have been a resident of Westminster Phase One, WCD for a little over one year, and there is a matter of grave concern which is affecting my community and its environs. Garbage is usually collected by the S&H Waste Disposal Service.  At first, the garbage would be picked up on a regular basis, ie, once per week, then the schedule was changed to fortnightly.  Suddenly, one month passed before the garbage collectors came again. The last date they visited the area was February 7, 2011. If my mathematical calculations are correct, next Thursday April 7, will be exactly two months since they visited the area and collected garbage.

Please note that a fee of $200 is usually charged for the garbage to be taken away by the company.  Worms and all sorts of insects will soon start to breed within the refuse if they haven’t started to do so as yet.  Some residents have resorted to burning their garbage.  But this practice is not safe, healthy or accommodating to everyone.

I have called the service on several occasions and a woman would answer and say she doesn’t know why the men aren’t coming, but would pass the message on to the men for them to come; or she would say one of the trucks had broken down.  I made a final call to the service yesterday only to discover that the telephone number (254-0095) has been temporarily disconnected.

Our garbage has already begun to be smelly.  How much longer would we be faced with this issue?

Can someone at the RDC of Region 3 please address this matter of grave sanitary importance as early as possible?

Yours faithfully
Palesa Lam
