These elections should be about issues, not personalities

Dear Editor,

The 2011 elections campaign has unofficially begun; David Granger with his meetings in PNC strongholds, and Donald Ramotar in the PPP’s. I am of the opinion, that both David Granger and Donald Ramotar will eschew racial politics, however, I am not certain whether all of their supporters will follow suit.

In listening to some of the citizens, when they discuss politics, they tend to see the People’s Progressive Party in a bad light. What is most amusing is that many of those critics have benefited from the party. Most of them also, regurgitate what they have heard from the politicians and read in the daily newspapers. They think not for themselves

These elections should be about issues that affect Guyanese, and not about personalities or race.

I wish to applaud the PNCR presidential candidate, Brigadier General David A Granger in connection with his letter to Mr Donald Ramotar, the PPP/C’s presidential candidate. I am quite certain Mr Ramotar, will respond in kind; he is that type of gentleman.

Contrary to a recent letter that all African Guyanese voters will support the PNCR, and Indian Guyanese voters the PPP/C, I wish to advise the letter writer, not to be like the proverbial ostrich with its head in the sand.  Both parties will attract voters of both races. It is my opinion, however, that the PPP/C will attract more African Guyanese voters, than the PNCR will Indian Guyanese voters.

Yours faithfully,
C S Vaughn
