Dear Editor,
I request some space in your letter column to express views on an issue of grave unfairness.
We the undersigned are continuous construction workers, employed for years by a professional and reputable company whose status stands out through the existence of some of the magnificent structures that tower all over Georgetown, New Amsterdam and throughout the length and breadth of Guyana.
Recently there have been some multi-million tenders for construction projects of a very high and sensitive nature. But for the last six of these contracts, 80% have been allowed to one construction company.
We who are employed by other construction companies also have families to maintain and we cannot make long-term plans for our families when companies like ours are given small term work, lasting for 12 months to 18 months and there is this company that would last until 2018 based on the volume of work they have acquired. This company alone has enough work to last for the next 7 to 9 years non stop.
With about eight to ten big contracts, projects which should have been completed two to three years ago are still unfinished and still they are getting more work on top of that. Editor, justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done!
