Matter is sub judice

Dear Editor,

The University of Guyana appreciates that you have afforded it the opportunity to respond to a letter titled ‘Provisional registration could jeopardise the equivalency status of UG’s LLB degree’ which was sent by Professor Eversley and published on July 23, 2011.  However, the University in keeping with the ethical behaviour required in matters that are sub judice (under judgement/before the court) will not at this time comment on core issues raised by the learned Professor, since they have been made sub judice by the said Professor’s actions in placing them before the court prior to him writing on them in the newspapers.

The University will therefore allow the Professor to have his day in court as he seeks to appeal to the 4th Estate.

With regards to his proposition: “that very few programmes of UG have credible international and regional recognition,” we are consulting with our attorneys as to whether this should be treated as a case of ignorance or a matter of mal-intent. Please note however that thousands of Guyanese, including Professor Eversley have been able to pursue further studies and to build their careers on the basis of UG’s numerous certificates, diplomas and degrees.

Yours faithfully,
Marlene Cox
Deputy Vice-Chancellor
