The President should explain the reported shipping of 29 tons of building material

Dear Editor,

It was widely reported in the NY and Guyana media that according to NY court documents Ed Ahmad, who was charged with mortgage fraud by the FBI, in 2009 shipped 29 tons of building material to President Jagdeo at State House. It means then that President Jagdeo imported those items and the public has the right to know what the materials were used for. The private sector, and the GRA, would be particularly interested in ascertaining that the requisite duties and taxes were paid.

If President Jagdeo did not engage in construction or commerce the public would like to know what became of the material. We know that the President is currently building his mansion at Sparendam with material imported from India so it would appear that Ed Ahmad is not his supplier. In whatever way the material was disposed of we would like to know that the Customs Duties and Consumption Taxes were paid.

Yours faithfully,
Malcolm Harripaul
