Dear Editor,
In another week, Guyanese of all walks of life will go to the polls to elect the next president and the team of people to govern Guyana at the national and regional levels for the next five years. A large proportion of these electors who will be exercising their right to vote are young people many of whom will be doing so for the first time.
Owing to the historic nature of these elections and the important role young people have to play in charting a new course for this beautiful country of ours that I would like to implore on them to be part of this history making exercise.
These elections are historic from two perspectives: first it it’s the first time since independence that that a single block, of voters representing the rainbow of Guyanese society, young people, have the numerical power to determine the next government; and secondly, these elections are occurring at a time when young people around the world are taking bold political initiatives.
In this context, on November 28 young people in Guyana will be armed with the most potent democratic instrument, their vote, to determine their destiny and that of our beloved country.
They can either decide to vote for a continuation of recalcitrant leadership and a society where opportunities for their personal development are minuscule, or they can choose a team of people who will put aside their political differences to work together to unleash Guyana’s potential so that every young Guyanese can participate in the development of their communities and country with tremendous opportunity in terms of sports, employment, entrepreneurship and social cohesion.
Over the years I have interfaced with many young people in the classroom and on the street corner, as well as in many youth conferences, and have come to appreciate their aspirations and desire to participate in the developmental process of this country. Thus. I took the opportunity to read all the published manifestos of the four political parties contesting the November elections to determine which one of these documents encapsulated their aspirations.
I have concluded, without fear of contradiction, that APNU is the only political party that outlined a coherent menu of measures for the holistic development of Guyana’s youth, ranging from educational empowerment (nursery to university) to social, political and economic integration in the wider developmental thrust.
It is from this perspective and because of my intimate knowledge of the capacity, integrity and conviction of this group of distinguished Guyanese patriots that I would like to implore each and every one of them to go out in their numbers and vote for APNU.
They should not be distracted or persuaded by the barrage of innuendoes and conspiracy theories which are spewed daily over the airwaves. A vote for APNU is not a vote for David Granger but a vote for a young person and an investment in their future.
