Trophy Stall, GCF chess tourney commences Saturday

The Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) and the Trophy Stall yesterday joined forces to launch the ‘Trophy Stall Senior and Junior Chess Tournament.’
The competition commences on Saturday at the Kei-Shar’s Sports Club, Hadfield Street and will end on January 30.

Managing Director of the Trophy Stall, Ramesh Sunich, presented the sponsorship cheque and trophies to treasurer of the GCF, Shiv Nandalall, yesterday at the Trophy Stall’s Bourda Market location.

This is the second year  that the Trophy Stall has partnered with the GCF to host a chess tournament.

“I see chess as an improvement in Guyana right now and I see there is need for more sponsorship from various business people, because chess can put Guyana on the international sporting map, ” said Sunich.

“We do have good players in this country, but they need sponsorship,” he added while addressing the media following the brief presentation.
“I just think that Guyana can be on the international scene where chess is concerned and because of that I would be always willing to assist them in any form,” he declared.

“I trust that this tournament will enlighten people to sponsor as well as to enter chess competitions, because more competitions are there to come,” Sunich added.
Nandalall acknowledged the support of the Trophy Stall and stated that the sponsorship was very beneficial to the GCF.

“On behalf of the federation I would like to thank Mr. Sunich for partnering with us for this tournament. It gives us an opportunity to start our programme of activities early and this tournament is significant for the federation since we are now able to kick off tournaments in January,” said Nandalall.
The eight-round Swiss System tournament is open to all senior and junior chess players and trophies are at stake for first to third places in both categories. There will also be a trophy for the most improved player.

Registration starts at 2pm on Saturday at the competition venue. The fee for seniors is $800 and $600 for junior chess players.
Junior and senior members of the Guyana Chess Federation will pay a reduced fee.
The GCF is also urging all members to update their membership for 2011.
