DeNobrega pulls off stunning win

Junior cyclist Paul DeNobrega pulled off a stunning victory yesterday at the National Park when he out-sprinted a number of senior cyclists to win the 18th Annual Ricks and Sari Agro Industries Limited youth race programme.

DeNobrega won the day’s feature event, the 35 laps invitation race in a time of one hour, 20 minutes and 32 seconds (1:20:32).

The young cyclist, who is regularly among the front runners in the junior category of races, cranked it up a notch yesterday to easily win the invitational race, leaving big names such as Alonzo Greaves and Robin Persaud in his trail. Greaves did well connect with the leading riders after spending much of the race deep in the second pack, but was restricted to second place, while Persaud led the race for a number of laps during the early stages, but was eventually limited to third.

Linden’s Mark Lewis placed fourth and another junior, Kurt La Rose picked up the fifth position. The sixth and final prize winning position in the invitational race was captured by Alex Mendes.

Meanwhile, sprint prizes in the feature race were picked up by Greaves (1), Persaud (3), Rastaff Oselmo (1) and Walter Grant-Stewart (2). In other races contested yesterday, cyclists from Linden were dominant often ending in the top three positions.

Linden’s Hazina Barrett won the Boys and Girls 12-14 years’ race in a time of eight minutes, four seconds (8:04), restricting Romario Samuels and Naiomi Singh to second and third respectively. Slyvan Lewis of Linden won the BMX 9-12 race. Shaquel Campbell was second and Deeraj Garbarran third.

Jamal Arthur limited Linden’s Denzel Huntley to second in the BMX 6-9 race, while Keon Harris finished third.

The riders from Linden were again in the spotlight when Michael Anthony and Montel Anthony finished one-three in the juvenile category. Marlon King was able to dissect the pair and placed second.

Ronella Samuels was the lone participant in the BMX 6-12 race and took away that first prize, while Hamzal Eastman, Darius Ramsammy and Randy Haynes topped the BMX open race in that order.

Haynes was the winner of the BMX 12-14 category with Ramsammy again in second and Kemraj Sanichan third.

The upright category was won by Dexter Wilson, with Andre Petty and newcomer Nimrod John second and third respectively.

Meanwhile in the day’s veteran races, Kennard Lovell rode to victory in the Veterans’ under-50 years race, leaving Berbice’s Turhan Harris and Linden’s Andrew Spencer in his trail to take second and third respectively.

A Lindener was again in the forefront when Lancelot Rose won the Veterans’ over-50 race. Newcomer Hilary Fraser finished second and Omar Mc Dougal third, while the veterans over-60 race was won by Morris Fagundes with Anthony Ferreira and Neville Atwell in second and third respectively.
