LONDON, CMC – Nicolette Fernandes has suffered a little setback in her steady rise in the World Rankings.
The Women’s International Squash Players’ Association (WISPA) announced recently that the top Caribbean woman from Guyana has fallen two places in the World Rankings to 48th. This was due in large measure to inactivity over the last two months, following a busy schedule last year, when she her best finishes were semi-final places in six tournaments – Liberty Bell Open, Swedish Open, Racquet Club International, New England Open, Sun & Surf Open, and London Open.
The 27-year-old Fernandes started the year on a difficult note, when she failed to reached the final rounds of the Cleveland WISPA Classic at the end of last month.
She lost in straight games in the qualifiers, when World No.14 Joelle King of New Zealand stopped her 11-4, 11-7, 11-6.
Fernandes achieved a highest ranking of 27th in May 2007, but a career-threatening knee injury four years ago derailed her rise in the game, and sidelined her for 23 months.
She has been fighting hard ever since to regain her form of old to spark another rise in the rankings.
