Rain washes out Guyana/English Lions first day

There was disappointment for both the Guyana and English Lions cricket teams as the first day of their West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional Four-Day match was washed out due to the consistent overnight rainfall and early morning showers at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, yesterday.

No toss was spun nor was there a chance of a start in sight for the fifth round battle which was scheduled for a 9:30am start. Eventually, play was called off at 3:50pm by umpires Clyde Duncan and Luther Kelly.

The England team has accumulated 30 points from their four matches and is third on the points table while the host team Guyana has 13 points and is in sixth position.

Coach of the Guyanese team Mark Harper and England’s coach Mick Newell along with their charges  were understandably quite disappointed at the loss of the entire day’s play.

Today, if weather permitting play is slated to start at the 9:30am.
Meanwhile, Essequibo’s youth fast bowler Ronsford Beaton is set to make his first class debut for Guyana if and when play does get underway. He was named in the final 11, while Royston Crandon was replaced by Narsingh Deonarine.
