Bonner makes life difficult for leaders Jamaica

SPANISH TOWN, Jamaica, CMC – Former Young West Indies all-rounder Kkrumah Bonner missed out on a century as Combined Campuses and Colleges carried the fight to Jamaica on the penultimate day of their fifth round encounter of the Regional First Class Championship here yesterday.

The 22-year-old cracked a highly attractive 87 to help carry CCC to 353 all out, after they resumed the day at Chedwin Park on 253 for seven.
At the close, Jamaica were 133 for three with the in-form Marlon Samuels already back in the pavilion cheaply.

CCC lost Kevin McClean (15) early in the day but any thoughts Jamaica had of quickly winding up the students’ innings were dashed as Bonner played boldly in a positive 73-run partnership with Ryan Austin (5), to frustrate the hosts.

The right-hander, dropped by wicketkeeper Chadwick Walton on 34 off pacer Andrew Richardson (4-59), hit 10 fours and two fours in an innings that lasted 162 balls and spanned 223 minutes.

Austin proved the perfect foil, facing 91 balls and occupying the crease just under 2-1/2 hours for his five runs.
When Austin finally succumbed lbw to leg-spinner Odean Brown (4-100) just after lunch, the innings swiftly ended as Bonner mis-timed a pull to be give Brown a simple catch at mid-on off pacer Jason Dawes.

Danza Hyatt (53) and Simon Jackson (25) then gave Jamaica a solid start of 49, before Jackson perished to a catch at square leg by Austin off seamer McClean, after stroking three fours off 50 balls.

The dangerous Samuels lasted only long enough to pass 600 runs for the season before he missed a drive at left-arm spinner Kavesh Kantasingh and was bowled for 14 at 74 for two.

Hyatt, who hit five fours and two sixes off 97 balls, consolidated in a 36-run third wicket stand with Brendan Nash (14 not out), as Jamaica made headway.

Just when he appeared poised to go on, he was bowled by off-spinner Austin late in the evening, leaving Jamaica to rebuild again.
