CCC grab points but Guyana storm back

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Pacer Carlos Brathwaite and off-spinner Ryan Austin snapped up four-wicket hauls to snatch first innings points for Combined Campuses and Colleges over Guyana in their sixth round Regional First Class Championship match yesterday.

Playing on the second day at 3Ws Oval, Brathwaite claimed four for 37 and Austin four for 76 to send Guyana crashing for 207 after they resumed their first innings on the second day of the match at 11 for one.

However, the visitors struck back late in the day as left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul claimed two for two in four overs, to reduce the hosts to 40 for three, an overall lead of 84 runs.

Rajendra Chandrika missed out on his second first class fifty when he top scored with 49 while Derwin Christian hit 41 but Guyana’s batting effort left a lot to be desired.

With a resolute approach, Chandrika seemed on course for his landmark before edging Brathwaite to slip at 98 for four after facing 108 balls and stroking five fours and a six.

He and nightwatchman Permaul (20) carried the score to 41 before Permaul missed a sweep and was bowled by Austin and Leon Johnson also got 20 before edging to Floyd Reifer at slip off Austin at 79 for three.

After Chandrika fell, Guyana lost wickets quickly and it was left to an entertaining 63-run, eighth-wicket stand between Christian and Zaheer Mohamed (34), to add precious runs.

For the second time in the match, CCC captain and opener Omar Phillips fell to the first ball of the innings off pacer Brandon Bess, setting the tone for the hosts’ second innings.

Permaul trapped Shacoya Thomas lbw for 15 and then bowled nightwatchman Kavesh Kantasingh without scoring, as Guyana stormed back.

Opener Romel Currency was unbeaten on 21 at the close, partnered by the in-form Kyle Corbin who is yet to score.
