Former president of the T&T Cricket Board (TTCB) Deryck Murray has taken issue with the West Indies selectors for the omission of Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who was dropped in favour of debutant leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo in Thursday’s World Cup game against England.
“I have no problem with having Bishoo, but not at the expense of one of our most experienced and accomplished batsmen. We have to make the best use of our players and I don’t think that was done. Chanderpaul has to come back,” Murray charged.
Murray said that Chanderpaul’s presence against England would have given the West Indies a great advantage, when they needed someone to anchor the innings in their victory bid.
“Chanderpaul was the right man for the England chase as we really missed him out there.” West Indies went under to England by 18 runs giving the English a place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
Murray says Chanderpaul must be brought back but Bishoo also has to stay. “Bishoo is really a good bowler. From what we have seen of this young man, he can handle himself well and he has to continue playing in this World Cup. The selectors have to find a place for Chanderpaul to come back and I am hopeful they can see the need for his solidity in the middle order.”
