Hornets squash GDF 66-10 in second round of GRFU 15’s

The Pepsi Hornets rugby team continued its unbeaten run in the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) Men’s 15’s tournament when they crushed the Guyana Defence Force rugby team 66-10 in the second round of the tournament yesterday at the National Park rugby field.

Playing the first match of the second round, Hornets made light work of GDF with their experienced line up, which included the likes of national players Ryan Gonsalves, Christopher Singh, Troy Bascom and Kevin McKenzie, all playing vital roles in Hornets’ win.

McKenzie, returning to the game after being suspended by the GRFU since last November, scored three tries and one conversion.

The GRFU recently suspended McKenzie’s one year suspension penalty and McKenzie did not hesitate to show that though he has been out of competition rugby for months, he is still one of the best players on the local scene, when he scored Hornets’ first try.

McKenzie’s opening try sent the message that he was back  and the try was quickly converted by Ryan Gonsalves.
Hornets’ Peabo Hamilton and Troy Bascom also breached GDF’s try line shortly afterwards with Bascom’s try being converted by Gonsalves.

Delroy Gordon added his name to the list of try scorers in the first half for Hornets before Gonsalves wrapped up the first half by scoring a penalty kick and a try, which he also converted.

Hornets were comfortably ahead 34-0 at the start of the second half before tries from GDF’s Rodwell Hutson and Clyde Prowell put GDF on the board. However, with none of their tries being converted and limited opportunities for scoring in the second half GDF remained on 10, while Hornets continued their display of top class rugby.

Hornets would go on to add 32 more points in the second half with two more tries and a conversion from McKenzie and one try from Bascom, Dwayne Jackson and Gonsalves, who also scored a conversion and a penalty kick in the second half.
