Bess and Fraser to clash for Cruiserweight title

Kurt Bess and Cleveland Fraser will clash for the vacant Cruiserweight title of Guyana when the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) carries the Fight Night card to Linden for the Easter Monday bout at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground from 20:00hrs.

According to Peter Abdool, President of the GBBC at a press conference at the National Communications Network (NCN) Studios, the Fight Night card which is normally staged on the last Friday in each month will for the first time head out of Georgetown, switching  to Easter Monday in order to promote the sport in the mining town during the Linden Town Week celebration.

However, Fraser (3-2-0) who now resides in Barbados believes that Bess (3-4-0) is just a stumbling block in his path to challenging  Kwesi Jones for the Light Heavyweight title of Guyana.

He told media representatives at the conference, “I live in Barbados with one intention and it’s to win,” he stated.
On the other hand while the hard hitting Bess had no predictions for the main bout, he said “if he wants to get to Jones he has to go through me and I don’t see that happening.”

While most of the Lindeners could not make it down for the press conference Pauline London(3-7-0) will go up against hometown favourite Sharon Warde (7-5-1) for the third time, after losing to Warde in the previous two meetings.
“I’m going to put out my bombs in Sharon Warde’s hometown.  I plan to take my fight to her early and will try to take her out the ring as soon as possible.

“I’m working hard for this fight and this time I’m going to take my fight to her body because I don’t think she can handle my body punches,” London added.

Meanwhile Cassius Matthews (3-5-1), the only Lindener who was present at the press conference, will face Shawn Pile (3-4-0). Matthews who lost his first match to Simeon Hardy after a seven-year absence from the sport believes that this match is just a stepping stone for him.

“I have a title match next month so I’m fully prepared for this fight, it’s preparation for my title fight,” he stated.
When asked if he knows anything about his opponent and what will he do differently to win this bout he stated, “I’m not interested in knowing my opponent but this is my division of 140lbs and I will win.”

Edmond Declou (4-1-1) out of Linden is also scheduled to face Winston Pompey (3-7-2) on the Fight Night card.

The night will also see four bouts of amateur action which will include Valanzo Hackette vs. Kelwin Josiah in the Flyweight division, Troy Biley vs. Dexter Wray in the Junior Flyweight division, Berth Braithwaite vs. Akeem Alexander in the Junior Welterweight division and Randy Tello vs. Dennis Thomas in the Middleweight division.

The amateur fights are expected to bring intense action as they usually do, according to Abdool.

Admission to the ground for the Fight Night will be $1,000 and the gates will be opened from 18:00hrs.
