Nelson spins Jamaica into early control – 1st day

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Jamaica captain Donovan Nelson gave his side early control of their top-of-the-table clash with Barbados in the WICB Regional Under-19 Championship yesterday.

Leg-spinner Nelson grabbed four wickets for 38 runs from 24 overs, and Marquino Mindley collected two for 32 off 13.4 overs, as the Barbadians were dismissed for 177 in their first innings.

Shai Hope struck three boundaries from 285 balls in 4 ½ hours, leading the way with an unbeaten 84, and Justin Greaves scored 31, but no other Barbados batsman reached 20.

Jamaica reached one without loss on the rain-affected opening day of the third round match at Enmore.
Play started an hour later than scheduled due to a wet outfield caused by overnight and early morning rain.
The Barbadians ran into early problems, after they were sent in to bat, losing their captain Kraigg Brathwaite caught behind off Mindley for two, playing forward, and fellow opener Shane Parris lbw to Mindley for eight.

Barbados reached 16 for two at lunch, and continued to lose wickets on resumption, sliding to 75 for five at tea.
Anthony Alleyne was run out for eight, Kyle Mayers was caught at mid wicket off Nelson for 17, and Neil Browne was bowled by a faster ball from Nelson for nought.

But Greaves joined Hope, and they added respectability to the total with a stand of 57 for the sixth wicket.
Hope proceeded to reach his 50 from 196 balls, but Greaves was caught behind, essaying a cut, off left-arm spinner Fabian Allen to leave the Barbadians 117 for six.

Mario Rampersaud came to the crease, and put on 41 for the seventh wicket with Hope before he was lbw to Nelson for 14.
This sparked a collapse that saw Barbados lose their last four wickets for 19 runs from 67 balls.
Barbados tops the standings with 16.1 points, and Jamaica are second on 15.6.
