LONDON, CMC – Carlos Edwards said he would probably face an extension of his one-year driving ban, rather than face jail following his after he was allegedly caught driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.
The Trinidad & Tobago midfielder played for Ipswich Town in their 1-0 English League Championship victory over West Ham United in the British capital on Tuesday.
“I just want to make it clear that I was not in jail, I am not in jail and I’m getting ready for the game with West Ham,” Edwards told TTFF Media Officer Shaun Fuentes.
Edwards said he was forced to get behind the wheel due to a family emergency. His wife is expecting twins, and she had to be rushed recently to hospital, where she is still warded.
“My wife is in the hospital at the moment and that’s the reason as she usually has been the one driving me before this,” he said. “Our fingers are crossed that all will be well with her. I will just continue to focus on my football at the moment.”
Edwards was banned from the roads in June for a string of driving offences and was charged on Monday for the new offences after police stopped his car in the south-east England community of Kesgrave.
The 32-year-old Edwards, a member of the 2006 Soca Warriors World Cup squad, was given an automatic one-year ban from the roads and fined 7,000 pounds sterling after admitting to a slew of driving offences in June.
Edwards is set to appear before South East Suffolk Magistrates’ Court in Ipswich on October 10.
