Century for Chandrika as HPC win again

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, CMC – Guyanese opener Rajendra Chrandrika hit a compact century and leg-spinners Shamarh Brooks and Kerron Cottoy claimed four wickets apiece, to propel the West Indies’ High Performance Centre to a handsome 86-run win over Afghanistan here yesterday.

The right-handed Chandrika’s 114 formed the basis of the HPC’s 257 for nine off their allotted 50 overs, after the Caribbean side were sent in at the ICC Global Cricket Academy.

Brooks, the captain, then captured four for 15 and Cottoy, four for 46, to rout the Afghans for 171 off 37.5 overs.

For the HPC, it was their second straight win in the Carib-Asian tournament following their upset of the West Indies senior team earlier in the week.

The HPC’s start was not the brightest, slipping to 64 for three before Chandrika and Brooks stitched up the innings with a 70-run, fourth wicket partnership.

Chrandrika led the way with 12 fours and a six, facing 145 balls while Brooks got 36.
When Brooks fell, Chandrika added a further 53 for the fifth wicekt with the aggressive Shane Dowrich (23) before Cottoy followed up with an unbeaten 31 at the death.

Medium pacer Dawlat Zadran finished with three for 56.
In response, Afghanistan wasted a fabulous start of 70 between openers Asghar Stanikz (53) and Javed Ahmed (17), to lose their last nine wickets for 101 runs.

Cottoy claimed both openers as wickets fell steadily, with the Afghans plunging to  114 for five. Mirwais Ashraf (28) and Nasir Jamal (26) produced a fightback with a sixth wicket stand worth 47 but Brooks accounted for both as he wrapped up the tail in a devastating spell.
