Lowden/Persaud clinch Men’s Over-40 Doubles title

Godfrey Lowden and Omar Persaud claimed the Men’s Over-40 Doubles title when play resumed in the Trophy Stall Doubles tournament on Saturday at the Pegasus hard court.

They came up against the crafty veteran Maxie Fox who teamed with Japanese Sakae Yamada in an evenly contested match. There were some long rallies as each team tried to seize the initiative. However, it came down to Lowden’s and Persaud’s better volleying before the match ended 6-4, 6-2.

On their way to the final the Lowden/Persaud pair came up against Berbicians Tony Ameerally and Mario Niamatalli and defeated them in two sets 6-1, 6-4.

In the Men’s Doubles top seeds Leyland Leacock and Gilbert Barckoy had a hard time against newcomers Kris and Joe Jugdeo. The match started with Leacock and Barckoy racing off to a 3-0 lead against their inexperienced opponents, before the match became competitive.
Serving at 3-4, the Jugdeos lost the chance to even the score and went on to lose the set 6-3.

In the second set, the score was even before the Jugdeos  secured a break and a chance at 5-4 to serve for the set but the experienced duo evened up and forced a tie break after the score reached 6-6.

Leacock and Barckoy went on to win the tie-break 7-4 and booked a place in the semi-final against top juniors Daniel Lopes and Gavin Lewis.
The tournament continues with matches in the Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles tomorrow.
