Campbelle likes Windies chances in qualifiers

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Teenaged utility player Shemaine Campbelle has backed her West Indies Women’s side to perform at the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifiers in Bangladesh next week.

The 14-member squad, led by skipper Merissa Aguilleira, left the Caribbean Wednesday following a two-week training camp at the High Performance Centre at the UWI Cave Hill Campus.

“We will do well, I’m confident about it because we have been showing good improvement in the past two to three years and we want to build on that,” the 19-year-old told Windiescricket.com.

“We put in the hard work here at the training camp and even before when we were home to make sure our fitness and preparation is up to standard so now it is just to go to Bangladesh and execute our plans.”

West Indies will do battle in Group B along with Pakistan, Ireland, Japan and hosts Bangladesh. The qualifiers run from November 14-25.

Group A comprises Sri Lanka, South Africa, Zimbabwe, United States and Netherlands.
The top four teams in the qualifiers will join top ranked sides, England, Australia, India and New Zealand in the Women’s World Cup 2013 in India.

“We don’t have to do anything fancy, we just have to bowl a tight line and length, play every ball on its merit and keep our head in the game, once we do those things we will come out on top,” said Campbelle who bowls medium pace but also keeps wicket.

West Indies open their campaign against India next Tuesday.
